BAA is beginning preparations for a sale and expects to formally approach the market in the new year and intends to agree a sale by summer 2012.

The Competition Commission's decision required the airport operator to sell either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport.

Edinburgh Airport handles approximately 9.2m passengers a year and operates 100,000 flights, making it Scotland's largest airport, BAA said.
