Land mines found in checked luggage at Salt Lake airport
SALT LAKE CITY - Land mines were found in checked luggage at Salt Lake International Airport last week, causing short flight delays. Lorie Dankers with the Transportation Security Association said the land mines had been expended, but still contained trace explosive chemicals. "What I've been told is they were training agents, they were expended," she said. "(There was) explosive residue on these items and as a result that's what caused the alarm." An explosive detection device sounded an alarm and a Navy explosive disposal squad responded and determined the mines were inert. "The system really did work in this case," Dankers said. All checked baggage from that area had to be rerouted to other baggage systems and four flights were delayed 19 minutes. It's not clear from which city the luggage originated or where it was headed. ? Molly Farmer, Twitter: mollyfarmer
