Jet Plans Freight Airline

MUMBAI: Jet Airways, India's largest private sector passenger carrier, plans to launch a freighter airline to cash in on the booming cargo business.

"We are studying the various aspects of the cargo business and envisage having a freighter airline over the next two to three years, catering to the domestic and international markets.

The cargo business is growing at a significant rate and we intend to be a key player in this business," Naresh Goyal, chairman, Jet Airways, told TOI.

At present, Jet offers cargo carriage facilities by letting out the belly space of its passenger fleet. It also has cargo facilities that are used by several courier companies, besides the postal department and international airlines.

The plan to set up a separate freighter airline, which is in its initial stages, is seen as a logical extension of its current business. It comes at a time when demand for freight is growing at an annual rate of over 15%.
