Airlines Tentatively Expect Growth in 2006

A pivotal year, 2006 could see many airlines in the black, with steady fuel prices, less carriers and higher fares.

As 2006 comes into focus, analysts say it will be a pivotal year, according to an article in the Washington Post.

Fewer planes due to less carriers (with some already bowing out -- FLYi Inc.) will aid the up swing for others possibly raising passenger fares and stock prices.

Southwest, already profitable through the rocky ride, is planning to up its profit by 15 percent in 2006. Five other carriers are also expected to earn a profit.

Speculation is still high for mergers, but no airlines have committed and fuel remains a continued threat to future financial success.
