Turin Airport is Paralyzed as Wildcat Strikes Continue

Turin's airport was paralyzed Tuesday as a wildcat strike that broke an Olympic games truce continued for a second day.

Airport spokesman Roberto Bergandi said workers continued the stoppage, which began Monday afternoon, throughout the night. Several planes were idled on the tarmac Tuesday morning.

Negotiations between airport officials and worker representatives were scheduled for midday, said Bergandi.

The workers were protesting plans to fire 11 ground workers.

Turin hosts the Winter Games Feb. 10-26.

A truce with local officials covering the airport began earlier this month, while a nationwide truce was slated to begin Jan. 31. The Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 10-26.

On Monday the labor stoppage forced some flights to land at other Italian airports and left travelers stranded in Turin when their flights were canceled.

An unrelated protest by Alitalia workers was causing chaos at airports across the country.
