US Airways Pilots' Seniority Lists a Post-Merger Issue

Pilots from the former America West side generally have much less experience than their merger partners at US Airways.

US Airways' pilots union is meeting in Charlotte this week, with elections for new officers scheduled Thursday. Among the union's top goals is to negotiate an agreement with America West pilots on how to merge the two airlines' seniority lists.

Seniority determines much of airline pilots' lives, from what types of planes they fly to what cities where they lay over, and how pilots from the two merger partners integrate their lists is likely the most controversial point in negotiations. Pilots from the former America West side generally have much less experience than their merger partners at US Airways. Such negotiations are likely to last for months and could eventually go to an arbitrator. -- stan Choe
