NATA: Heightened Security Impacts Aviation Industry

As you are well aware, airports in Europe and the US were in chaos Thursday after a foiled terrorist plot cancelled hundreds of flights and delayed thousands of others. Heightened levels of security are now in place at airports throughout the air transportation system.

The National Air Transportation Association continues to be in contact with senior Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials on behalf of our Airline Services Council (ASC) members. At the present time security protocol changes are focused primarily on passenger and baggage screening operations.

Although the possibility exists for future change in protocols on the service provider side of airport operations, no major changes are imminent e.g., full implementation of employee screening.

Based on contact with the TSA, NATA recommends close communication with your customer airlines. Given the security focus on airline operations, current information for the air carriers can be found at www.airlines.org, which is the web site for the Air Transport Association.

NATA will continue to monitor the TSA's plans for security protocol changes especially as they may impact the airline services sector of the industry.
