OTTAWA, April 2 - Airports across Canada will receive close to $33 million for 28 new projects to enhance their safety. The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced funding under the Government of Canada's 2007-08 Airports Capital Assistance Program.

"The safety and security of the traveling public is a top priority for Canada's New Government," said Minister Cannon. "These projects will improve airport safety and protect Canadians. They will also boost the economic potential of the airports and surrounding communities."

The Airports Capital Assistance Program finances capital projects related to safety, asset protection and operating cost reduction. Eligible airports must have year-round, regularly scheduled passenger service, they must meet Transport Canada airport certification requirements and they cannot be owned or operated by the Government of Canada.

Since its creation, the program has distributed over $400 million for 509 projects at 159 airports. Over 99 per cent of these were airside safety-related projects such as the rehabilitation of runways, taxiways, visual aids and heavy airside mobile equipment.

The program is an integral part of the National Airports Policy, which clearly defines the Government of Canada's role regarding airports. Federal funding for these projects is provided for in the existing financial framework.
