A filing of union authorisation cards with the federal National Mediation Board (NMB) has been made, the Transport Workers Union of America (TWU) said, on behalf of nearly 8,000 employees at Continental Airlines.
The employees in question reportedly work in fleet services in functions such as loading baggage, handling freight and de-icing aircraft and seeking union election authorisation. The union also said that in the past couple of years, Continental's ground workers' pay has gone from the second highest in the industry to sixth. In 2006 the union reportedly narrowly lost a representation election for Continental ground workers because of low turnout, as the Railway Labor Act requires that a clear majority of eligible voters cast ballots.
