UPS Distribution Hub at D/FW Will Expand

UPS will expand its distribution hub at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport as part of a plan to add five regional hubs by next year, the company said Tuesday.

UPS will add large-freight service to its small-package facility at D/FW and add 35 to 40 jobs, company spokesman Bob Godlewski said. The company has more than 1,500 workers in North Texas, including almost 600 in Tarrant County.

The company said the expansion will be finished next year but didn't release a timetable.

"We will have more air-cargo capacity when the expansion is completed," Godlewski said.

The company also plans to expand facilities at airports in Ontario, Calif.; Rockford, Ill.; Columbia, S.C.; and Philadelphia. Like D/FW, those airports already handle small packages for daily UPS flights.

"UPS is accelerating its push into the domestic air-freight business, and this network is going to help us bring unparalleled service to the marketplace," UPS Chairman Mike Eskew said.

The five projects will cost $24 million and create a total of 200 jobs, the company said.

In 2004 UPS bought Menlo Worldwide Forwarding of Redwood City, Calif. After the purchase, UPS said it would build a new main freight hub in Louisville, Ky., to tie the Menlo network into UPS air facilities.

UPS said the expansions will add more than 100 destination cities to its network, tripling its delivery schedule.
