UND Aerospace and a team of aviation researchers are installing a super reflective remote airport lighting system on a small rural airstrip just west of Manvel, N.D.

Tom Jeidlik, a UND faculty member, said crews started installing the system Tuesday on land owned by Jim Moreland of Manvel. The sod runway primarily is used by small local aircraft and crop dusters.

The lighting system uses flashing markers and reflective markers that bounce light from incoming planes back to the aircraft, making landing safe and easy at night.

UND and the other groups are using about $560,000 in federal funding to complete the study. Hopes are to have it fully operational in two years.
