DULLES, Va. (AP) -- Increasing travel at Dulles International Airport has helped overwhelmed security workers' ability to screen checked luggage, resulting in flight delays.
Air traffic rose 39 percent in April - the last month available - in part due to the launch of budget carrier Independence Air and expanded service by foreign airlines, according to airport figures.
Several airlines have experienced repeated delays because there aren't enough screening machines for their use.
Lufthansa spokesman Tom Tripp said afternoon flights to Munich and Frankfurt are often delayed as much as an hour because of the luggage problem. ''We are deeply concerned,'' he said.
Independence Air said it regularly has luggage delays, but they usually last no more than 10 minutes.
Other airlines suffering delays include JetBlue, Air France, Virgin and Continental.
