American Airlines is ramping up amenities for passengers with premium tickets. Coming are lie-flat seats and on-demand radio and video entertainment for business-class passengers on all Boeing 767-300s in 2006 and on 777s the next year.

"It's huge. They have to do this. Ordinary reclining seats ain't going to cut it anymore," said Mike Boyd, an airline consultant.

Menus on trans-Atlantic flights for first and business class starting this month provide a "Continental flair" on U.S.-bound flights, including seared beef fillet with porcini mushroom butter. Europe-bound flights offer chicken Madeira, corn-bean ragout and pumpkin ravioli, developed by Stephan Pyles and others.
