Birmingham International Airport today restated its determination to further reduce carbon emissions, despite unprecedented progress already being made by the Airport Company.

The Company had previously set a target reduction of 4% for CO2 emissions from the total energy consumption over a five year period; and actually achieved an impressive 5.7% reduction to date.

John Morris, Head of Corporate and Community Affairs, said:

"This is great news, but we will not sit back and say 'job done'. Ours is an industry with a conscience, and we will strive to bring about greater improvements, even before carbon trading becomes mandatory for aviation-related activities".

"We are extremely interested in some of the new technology coming on stream, such as fuel cells, and where practicable, we will seek to use it in a way that benefits everyone".

The Airport is also achieving a record percentage share of people arriving by public transport - currently around 18%.

More details are available at the Airport's web site.
