PITTSTON TWP. -- Two flights into Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport were unable to land Monday morning due to fog. Airport Director Barry Centini said a US Airways flight from Philadelphia and another from Pittsburgh were forced to return to their takeoff points.

?Everything else was on time,? he said, except some Comair flights from Atlanta, which were late taking off.

Centini didn?t know if the airport was fogged in when the planes took off. He said even if that were the case, flight controllers might have thought it would clear by the time they arrived.

There is little economic effect on the airport when flights can?t land.

?We lose the landing fee,? Centini said, which is calculated per 1,000 pounds weight. ?For an airplane like that, it could be $20 to $25.?
