Charlotte Airfares Dip Nearly 5 Percent

Airfares from Charlotte fell nearly 5 percent between the second quarter of 2004 and the same period in 2005, the federal government said Wednesday.

Of the 85 largest markets surveyed by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, Charlotte had the seventh-highest decline.

The drop is likely driven by the recent arrival of low-fare carriers Independence Air and AirTran Airways, which have forced US Airways to lower fares from Charlotte.

Nationally, average fares increased nearly 2 percent in the same period. Cincinnati, a Delta hub, led the nation with a 15 percent decline. San Jose, Calif., and Des Moines, Iowa, tied for the largest fare increase, at 8 percent. -- Tony Mecia
