Ted, the low-fare unit of bankrupt United Airlines, will begin selling items ranging from magic kits to sunglasses on about half of its flights starting Dec. 1.

The products, priced from $5 to $25, will be sold for cash on flights over 880 miles, or 2 ½ hours, Jean Medina, a United spokeswoman said. The UAL Corp. unit will be the only major carrier to sell retail goods during U.S. flights. Flight attendants will receive a 2 percent commission on each sale they handle.

U.S. airlines have been taking away some services and charging for others since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks extended a slump in business travel and triggered four consecutive years of industrywide losses. Pillows have vanished from the main cabins on many flights. Some carriers sell $5 snack boxes instead of serving hot meals.
