Freight Carrier Begins Refueling Flights at Salina, Kan., Airport

Custom Air will refuel up to four jets a day at America Jet, a fixed-base operator based at the Salina Municipal Airport.

Starting next week, you might notice an increase in the number of large jets landing and taking off in Salina.

Custom Air Transport, an air freight carrier whose contracts include the U.S. Postal Service, will be refueling transcontinental flights here until Christmas.

Custom Air will refuel up to four jets a day at America Jet, a fixed-base operator based at the Salina Municipal Airport.

Richard Cozzi, president of Custom Air, said the flights will start Tuesday.

"This is what is known as the Christmas network," he said. The U.S.

Postal Service enters seasonal contracts with companies such as Custom Air to ensure it can make good on its promise of delivery by Christmas.

Starting Tuesday, Custom Air DC10s will begin refueling daily in Salina, Cozzi said. A week later, some of its Boeing 727s also will begin refueling here.

About 7,000 business jet aircraft refuel in Salina every year.
