Missouri Flights a Hot Ticket, Southwest Says
It's been only one day, but Southwest Airlines reports that it's already experienced brisk sales for its new flights from Dallas Love Field to St. Louis and Kansas City.
"We've gotten a great response," spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said. "We've got some great fares out there, and the public has really responded."
Demand has been particularly heavy on dates around the holidays, such as Dec. 24, she said.
Southwest will launch the service Dec. 13, with prices as low as $79 each way. The airline has also offered some Internet-only fares as low as $49 each way.
Southwest began advertising the new flights with radio and television spots Thursday.
The new service comes after a federal law exempted Missouri from the restrictions of the Wright Amendment. The amendment, passed in 1979, restricted service at Love to Texas and adjacent states.
Kansas, Alabama and Mississippi were later added, although Southwest never began nonstop flights to those states.
American Airlines matched Southwest's fares on flights to the two cities from Dallas/Fort Worth Airport.
American spokesman Tim Wager said it's too early to know how much more demand the lower fares have spurred.
"The holiday period was already very, very full," he said.
