Northwest Airlines Corp is to cancel two direct flights from Memphis to cities on the west coast of the United States and one flight to Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Memphis International Airport has said that the direct flights from Memphis to San Francisco and from Memphis to Seattle will be cancelled during January and February. The flights are however expected to be resumed in the spring.

Both flights will be suspended on 4 January and service will resume on 3 April, according to Northwest spokeswoman Jennifer Bagdade.

The airline has also said that it will suspend one of its Monday direct flights to Amsterdam from 17 January to 5 March 2006.

The route to Amsterdam is the only transatlantic flight Memphis International Airport offers, the Memphis Business Journal reported.

Additionally, the Detroit Free Press has said that Northwest Airlines will cancel two destinations from its schedule at Detroit Metro Airport next month.

The cancellation is apparently part of a plan to remove 30 flights a day. From 4 January the airline will no longer offer direct flights to Orange County or Salt Lake City, according to the Press, while it will also cancel 28 flights a day at Minneapolis-St Paul International Airport.
