Comair pilots on Friday approved concessions worth about $17 million that the airline says it needs to remain competitive with other regional airlines that want to provide feeder service to its parent, Delta Air Lines Inc.

Members of the 1,700-member branch of the Air Line Pilots Association that represents Comair pilots ratified the contract amendment by only a 16-vote margin, 704-688, union spokesman Brian Moynihan said.

The package includes pay reductions of 9 percent to 21 percent, eliminates some retirement benefits and makes changes in work rules.

The proposal did not have the official endorsement of the union leadership, but the leadership agreed to put the proposal to a vote.

Comair President Fred Buttrell said Friday in a memo to employees that the airline was grateful for the pilots' ratification.
