French transport authorities temporarily halted all flights at an airport in the southwest of the country on Saturday because of heavy snowfall, regional officials said.

No flights were allowed to land or leave from the Blagnac airport in Toulouse between around 10 a.m. (0900GMT) and the early afternoon, officials in the Haute-Garonne region said.

Flights resumed after crews cleared the runways, but delays remained and new suspensions were possible if conditions worsened as evening fell, officials said.

LCI Television broadcast pictures of stranded passengers sleeping on benches and curled up under shiny plastic blankets.

Up to 7 centimeters (2 3/4 inches) of snow fell on Toulouse and its outskirts Friday evening and Saturday morning, said national weather forecaster Meteo France. More snow was forecast for Sunday.
