Airlines canceled more than 500 inbound and departing flights at New York City's airports. Delta Air Lines canceled arrivals and departures at Washington, Philadelphia, Boston, Baltimore, Providence, R.I., and Hartford, Conn. The closures and grounded planes stranded travelers elsewhere across the country. About 7,500 people were stuck just at Florida's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, spokesman Steve Belleme said. "Our car's in Newark. We can't even get close to there. We can't even get to Philadelphia or D.C.," said Maria Martinez, whose flight from Miami International Airport was canceled.

Tom Mulligan went out during the height of the storm, about 10 a.m., when Central Park was mostly quiet. He stood alone, knee deep in snow, staring up at the trees. "Look up there," he said. Perched high on a snow-covered branch was one of the red-tailed hawks that call New York City home. "It is just so beautiful," he said. "It is amazing to have everything quiet."

Sean Hurley, a husky 15-year-old from Brooklyn, made $75 shoveling snow. It was a good haul. Then he said he and his buddy, Christian McCarthy, would go home and root for the public schools to close today. "I'm hopin' here," Hurley said. "Maybe when the board of ed guy comes around, I'll push a little snow into the streets."
