London Airport Pollution Levels Well Above Safety Limits
AIR pollution levels at Heathrow, Gatwick and London City airports are well above safety limits, a report says today.
There are "dangerously high levels" of nitrogen dioxide - a noxious gas that irritates the airways of the lungs and causes breathing difficulties.
Those with asthma and other breathing problems are most at risk. Toxic atmospheric pollutant levels at Heathrow and Gatwick are 75 per cent above European Union guidelines.
London City and Southampton are both 50 per cent higher than the safety limit of 40 micrograms per cubic metre of air.
The report by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy will reignite health worries over high levels of pollution near airports and proposed runway expansions at Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick.
