Officials of the "vacation-only" carrier announced its planned debut at Chicago/Rockford International Airport.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Festival Airlines, a startup carrier headquartered in Chicago, plans to begin commercial flights later this year to vacation destinations in North and South America.

Officials of the "vacation-only" carrier announced its planned debut at Chicago/Rockford International Airport. It will be the first airline to base its flight operations at the Rockford facility, which is 60 miles northwest of O'Hare International Airport.

Festival said it will use Boeing 757-200 aircraft for flights to such destinations as Las Vegas, Orlando, Cancun and St. Thomas, some as part of vacation packages. Besides Rockford, it also intends to fly out of Chicago's Midway International Airport.

The company has yet to apply for federal approval, however, so specific information is not available and the first flight remains months away.
