The operators of Brussels International Airport implemented a total ban on smoking inside all airport buildings Saturday, including all bars, lounges and restaurants.

The ban applies new Belgian legislation which forbids smoking in the work place. That law came into force in January.

Airport operator BIAC, said it decided to go further than the law and get rid of dedicated smoking areas in airline lounges or bars and nonpublic areas like stairwells and corridors, which were still in use until this week.

"All public areas of the airport are now 100 percent smoke-free," BIAC said in a statement. "Although the airport community sympathizes with the smoking passenger who from now on will have to do without a smoke even longer, most travelers applaud the new measure."
