GREENSBORO - A dump truck pulled down power lines Wednesday morning on Burgess Road, cutting the electricity to more than 100 businesses, including Piedmont Triad International Airport.

The accident, which a Duke Energy spokesman said occurred about 11 a.m., resulted in brief delays at the airport for passengers checking in and passing through security. Every airline but Delta Air Lines was running on emergency power generators within minutes of the outage.

Delta, because of a recent move to the airport's new north terminal, was without power for more than half an hour.

Ted Johnson, the airport's executive director, said the airline was back in operation by 11:45 a.m.

The Transportation Security Administration's baggage screening machines were shut down for less than an hour, Johnson said. That was because work is still being done in the new parts of the terminal and contractors had turned off switches that prevented generator power from reaching the baggage screening machines.

Duke officials expected to have power restored to the area by mid afternoon.
