Structural Problems Found In Ft. Lauderdale Airport Garage

Engineers said that the aging garage needs about $5 million in repairs, but officials say the garage is safe for public use.

Structural engineers confirmed Monday that a 20-year-old parking garage at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has structural problems and needs repairs.

Engineers said that the aging garage needs about $5 million in repairs, but officials were quick to stress that the garage is safe for public use.

Plans are in place to turn the building into a baggage security area as part of future development at the airport, but in the process of creating that design, the problems were discovered. As part of the airport's 20-year development plan, the building would either be retrofitted as an area for baggage screeners and an inline baggage screening area, or a new facility would be built for the purpose.

Broward commissioners were in the process of choosing an engineering firm to come up with a design when they learned of the structural problems.

Choosing a firm is now delayed while the cracks in concrete decks and joists and leaks in the expansion joints are repaired.
