Boston-bound travelers out of Buffalo have a new non-stop option starting today courtesy of JetBlue Airways.
The low-cost airline is launching three direct flights from Buffalo Niagara International Airport to Boston's Logan International Airport, departing at 7 a.m., 11:10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., daily.
"Boston was a perfect candidate for direct flights from Buffalo for a lot of reasons," said JetBlue spokesman Bryan Baldwin.
"We had heard from our customer base that there was great interest in Boston as a destination, and we are really growing our base of operations at Logan and adding a lot of gates."
Baldwin said several of the new Buffalo-Boston flights are sold out in the next few days, and bookings are strong several weeks out. The airline will employ its new 100-seat Embraer 190 jets on the new route.
Lawrence M. Meckler, Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority executive director, said the new non-stop flights to Boston should find an enthusiastic audience here.
"For the past several years there have been few direct Buffalo to Boston flights, and the lack of competition on that route kept prices high," Meckler said. "We know the demand is there, so these new, low-cost flights should be very popular."
JetBlue's March announcement of the new Boston service was followed by US Airways' decision to boost its menu of non-stop, Buffalo-Boston flights from four to seven on weekdays, and from three to five flights on weekends. Those additional flights started earlier this month.
JetBlue's ticket prices, ranging from $69 to $129 each way, also caused US Airways to drop its fares to as low as $118 round-trip, from what had been an average round-trip price of $217.
"This is exactly what we want for our passengers," Meckler said. "We're seeing a constant improvement in destinations, connections and fares."
Baldwin said while JetBlue has no immediate plans to increase the menu of new, non-stop destinations from Buffalo, the airline is constantly looking at possible pairings.
"We're looking at ways to connect the dots where it makes sense. Buffalo is likely to benefit from that in the future," Baldwin said.
He cited the airline's recent addition of Washington, D.C., as a possibility for non-stop service out of Buffalo. And JetBlue has announced non-stop flights from Syracuse to Orlando, which might bode well for similar service for Buffalo fliers.
In the past month the total number of daily commercial flights out of the Buffalo airport has increased from 107 to 118. In addition to the new JetBlue and US Airways flights, Delta has introduced four non-stop flights to New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Northwest Airlines added another flight to Minneapolis.
