2 Killed in Plane Crash Behind Home in Virginia

The plane's door opened sometime after takeoff and the pilot was trying to return to Norfolk Int'l Airport.

A pilot and his wife were killed Tuesday when their single-engine plane crashed in the back yard of a Virginia Beach home minutes after takeoff, authorities said.

No one on the ground was hurt and there was no damage to any buildings in the crowded residential area, state police spokesman Sgt. D.S. Carr said. The victims' identities were not immediately released.

The plane's door opened sometime after takeoff and the pilot was trying to return to Norfolk International Airport when the crash occurred, said Arlene Murray, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Beechcraft Sundowner crashed in the yard of Linda Beck, who said she heard an explosion, cracking trees and a crash.

"It's unbelievable," she said. "I knew something wasn't right by how loud and how close the plane was."
