More National Guard troops have been deployed to airports throughout California, following last week's heightened airport security in the wake of a foiled terror plot to attack airliners flying from Britain to the United States, officials said Wednesday.
A total of 600 National Guard troops have been so far deployed to eight airports, including those in the Los Angeles area, to provide support to airport security agents and local law enforcement.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger last week ordered about 300 National Guard troops to be deployed at airports and other "high priority locations" in the state after British authorities announced they foiled the plot to blow up U.S.-bound planes.
At the Los Angeles International Airport, some 200 unarmed National Guard troops were performing their duties under the control of the airport's federal Security Director, a spokeswoman said.
