United Airlines Repays $194,000 Eppley Debt

The Omaha Airport Authority just collected an old debt. United Airlines, which emerged from bankruptcy in February, paid up on a bill of more than $194,000.

The bill represents the amount United owed at Omaha's Eppley Airfield for landing fees and rent in December 2002, when the airline declared bankruptcy.

The airline attempted to negotiate to pay the bill over time with interest or to pay a reduced amount, said the authority's executive director, Don Smithey.

The airline's efforts to negotiate a deal "died on the vine," Smithey said.

A number of airlines are in bankruptcy proceedings, but only one other carrier owes the Omaha authority a significant amount, Smithey said.

Northwest Airlines owes about $195,000.

Delta Airlines operates in Omaha only through regional carriers, which are separate businesses. One, ComAir, also is in bankruptcy and owes the authority a few thousand dollars, he said.

Bankruptcy law states that the old company's debts are due and payable promptly when the new company emerges from bankruptcy, he said.

"Stan is a good bill collector," Smithey said, referring to Stan Kathol, director of finance and administration. "You don't want him calling you at home."
