TSA Suspends Explosives Screening Installations

The TSA is experiencing some issues that were not anticipated with the devices.
Sept. 5, 2006

Because of problems with the reliability of the system, the United States Transportation Security Administration has reportedly decided to suspend the installation of the only airport checkpoint device that automatically screens passengers for hidden explosives.

According to The New York Times, the agency's chief technology officer Randy Null said that the TSA is experiencing some issues that were not anticipated with the devices.

It was also reported that one of the problems with the so-called puffers is that they do not have sensors for liquid explosives, while they also are prone to break down or have other performance problems that may be caused by dust and dirt.
