Gun in Bag in Ark. Draws No Federal Charges

Sept. 13, 2006
Security guards at the airport found a .25-caliber Browning pistol, two loaded magazines in the carry-on bag, and the weapon had a round in its chamber.

A Hot Springs man who tried to carry a loaded automatic pistol on to a flight at Little Rock's National Airport over the weekend is not facing federal criminal charges, the head of Arkansas' Transportation Security Administration said Monday.

Security guards at the airport found a .25-caliber Browning pistol in the carry-on bag of Calvert Addy, 64. The bag also contained two loaded magazines, and the weapon had a round in its chamber.

Jerry Henderson, director for the Transportation Security Administration's operation in Arkansas, said federal authorities are considering taking civil actions against Addy, including a fine of up to $10,000.

He declined to comment on why Addy had the gun in his luggage. Addy did not respond Monday to a message left at his home.

Henderson said weapons have been found in the luggage of air travelers in the past, and that "typically, they just forget that they have them." Addy faces a misdemeanor state charge of carrying a weapon.

A hearing in Little Rock District Court is scheduled for Sept. 22.
