DHS Says More Airports Have e-Passport Readers
The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has said that e-Passport readers are now in place and being used to process holders of e-Passports at additional airports, including Honolulu International Airport and Kona International Airport.
The DHS said that installation of the new readers occurred as part of a series of deployments that began at the San Francisco International Airport in September and will continue at US airports through the next few weeks. The readers are reportedly being installed in preparation for a deadline of 26 October 2006 which requires US ports of entry to have the capability to compare and authenticate data in e-Passports issued by Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries.
In addition the DHS said that since deploying e-Passport readers at San Francisco International Airport three weeks ago more than 1,944 e-Passports have been processed.
