Canadian Airports Warn Travellers of Passport Requirement for US Travel

The Canadian Airports Council has said that Canada's airports are advising United States-bound travellers that a new passport requirement for US travel by air will come into effect this January.

The council said that from 8 January 2007 all passengers flying to the US will require a valid passport or a NEXUS Air card.

January is the start of a busy post-holiday sun travel season in Canada.

In addition to US-destined travellers the new requirement will also affect travellers transiting the US, the organisation said. This may impact some vacationers who may not even realise they will be travelling through the US.

The only acceptable alternative to a passport for entry to the US after 8 January is the NEXUS Air card, which is an electronic card programme that allows pre-screened travellers to use an electronic kiosk instead of passing through immigration and customs officer lines after paying a one-time fee and undergoing a background check.
