Gy r-Pér Airport Plans to Serve No-frills for Three Capitals
Per airport, located close to the west Hungarian city of Gyor at the site of a former military grass airfield, has set itself the goal of servicing passengers destined for three European capital cities: Bratislava, Budapest and Vienna, broadsheet Magyar Hirlap reported.
Per's management is negotiating with a British investor prepared to invest billions of forints to upgrade the facility. This will enable the airport to serve no-frills airlines, state newswire MTI cited the airport CEO Laszlo Vadasz as saying. The name of the potential investor was not disclosed.
The 12-employee airport, whose value rose above HUF 1 billion after the development works finalised in 2003, is currently suitable for receiving aircraft for at most 74 passengers. Last year, Per served 16,000 passengers and registered 4000 landings/take-offs.
After the upgrade, the airport will become suitable for Boeing-737s and Airbus-320s, and will focus on discount airlines. If all goes according to plan, the basic infrastructure will be in place by late 2008 and the first Boeing or Airbus land at Per in 2009, MTI writes.
