Virginia Airport Board Votes to Recoup Stipends

ELIZABETH CITY, Va. -- The Elizabeth City-Pasquotank County Airport Authority has agreed to ask for repayment of stipends paid to its members in 2003 and 2004.

In December, the state auditor sent a letter to current authority Chairman Wayne Perry suggesting that the $2,064.44 paid out from September 2003 to June 2004 be recouped from those authority members.

The letter also said the Airport Authority had stopped paying the stipend when it learned in June 2004 that it was prohibited from compensating its members .

The authority is allowed to only repay expenses that are related to work for the board.

Scott Hinton, airport manager, said airport authority members voted unanimously at their Wednesday night meeting to request repayment.

Hinton also said that when the state auditor's report was made public, three of the members - Bill Lehmann, Hugh Clinkscales and Perry - visited the airport to repay what they owed.

Letters will be sent to the remaining members, but some are still serving on the airport authority, so Hinton said he doesn't expect any problems.
