Logan Developing Plan for Acreage Around Utah Airport
LOGAN, Utah -- Five hundred acres - most of it farmland -surrounds the Logan-Cache Airport, and planning for its future got a boost from the airport authority board this morning.
The Logan-Cache Airport Authority Board decided to start spending some of the $50,000 authorized two years ago for a master plan of the lands surrounding the airport north of the city.
The airport is bounded by Logan, North Logan, Hyde Park and unincorporated Cache County, and there's great potential for economic development nearby, said Jay Nielson, Logan's city planner.
"It's an opportunity probably larger than we know," said Nielson. "The airport is a huge economic engine."
A master plan, he said, should help articulate the board's vision. "That vision can be converted into deals," Nielson said.
A master plan for the land around the airport is expected to cost $100,000.
The head of a task force working to attract an airline with scheduled service to the Cache Valley said the group will try to raise some of the remaining $50,000. Cities with land adjacent to the airport might eventually be tapped for money as well.
If the board later decides to update its master plan for the land inside the airport's fence as well, it could cost another $100,000.
Airport Manager Richard Stehmeier said he hopes to get $100,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration for such a master plan.
