A union representing Frontier Airlines pilots said Thursday that members have ratified a new four-year collective bargaining agreement with the Denver-based carrier.

Members of the Frontier Airline Pilots Association ratified the agreement 289-140, with 78 percent of eligible voters casting ballots.

Jeff Potter, president and chief executive of Frontier Airlines Holdings Inc., lauded the ratification as a tremendous step forward "as we enter one of the most exciting and dynamic phases of this company's history."

The agreement, which amends the previous five-year contract signed May 2000, takes effect in March.

"This agreement provides significant improvement to our pilots' retirement benefits, preserves our scheduling and work rules, and improves the job protections our pilots have earned through their contributions to Frontier," association president Jeffrey Thomas said in a written statement.

Frontier shares fell 3 cents Thursday to close at $7.04 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
