FAA Probes Cause of Beechcraft Baron 55 Crash

The twin-engine plane, a 1968 Beechcraft Baron 55, went down in swampy woods beyond the runway of the Adirondack Regional Airport almost immediately after taking off.

SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. - Federal investigators were trying Thursday to determine what caused a small plane to crash in the Adirondacks shortly after takeoff, killing the pilot, Scott Thomas, 49, of Saranac Lake.

The twin-engine plane, a 1968 Beechcraft Baron 55, went down in swampy woods beyond the runway of the Adirondack Regional Airport almost immediately after taking off at around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were at the crash scene, which is about 45 miles south of the Canadian border in the northern Adirondacks.
