U.N. Refugee Official Killed in Cameroon Crash
GENEVA -- The U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday that one of its officials was among those killed in the crash of a Kenya Airways jetliner last weekend.
Akouvi Enyonam Kumodzi-Agbeviade, a Togolese national, had been on mission in the Central African Republic capital, Bangui, before boarding the plane in Douala, Cameroon's largest city.
All 114 people on board were killed in the crash early Saturday after the Nairobi-bound jetliner lost power in both engines during a storm and plunged nose first into a mangrove swamp 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the airport.
Kumodzi-Agbeviade was working for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees as senior administrative and program officer in Bangui, agency spokesman Ron Redmond said.
He said another UNHCR employee was recently killed in Afghanistan. The 38-year-old local driver was shot by an unidentified assailant on the way to work. Redmond did not identify the Afghan by name, but said an investigation is currently being carried out.
"The high commissioner and all UNHCR staff extend our deepest condolences to the families of these two valued colleagues," Redmond said.
