Virgin America has received final approval from the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin operations.

The start-up carrier said that, in its final order, the DOT found that the company fully complied with all requirements regarding fitness, US citizenship requirements and control. Additionally, the DOT acknowledged that this final approval had been given after the company's acceptance of several other conditions that were made public in March when Virgin America's application was tentatively approved.

Virgin America said that it is planning a mid-summer launch and its first flights will be between its home base in San Francisco and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
