Air Canada has announced a plan that will enable its passengers to purchase a carbon offset for their air travel.

Customers of Air Canada and Jazz booking through http://www.aircanada.com can select a carbon offset for their journey, for an additional fee, and the website offers travellers information including a calculator to determine the amount of carbon dioxide a trip will generate and the cost to offset it, with an option to pay. The offsets are reportedly arranged through Zerofootprint, a non-profit organisation.

According to The Canadian Press, based on the specifications of Air Canada's current aircraft it will cost CAD19.20 to offset one passenger's share of carbon dioxide emissions on a return flight from Toronto to London and CAD12.80 between Vancouver and Montreal.
