The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has plans to begin testing advance technology (AT) X-ray machines, including multi-view and high definition X-rays, at airport security checkpoints.

The TSA will reportedly launch tests of the new tools in the coming weeks. The technology is expected to provide enhanced explosive detection capabilities for carry-on baggage.

The TSA made the announcement in connection with contract awards to L3 Communications, Smiths Detection and Rapiscan Systems. Under the contracts each vendor is to lease seven AT X-ray machines to the TSA for testing in airports. The initial contracts are worth a total of USD1.4m, with options to purchase additional units in the future.
