United to apply for US-China route

United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAUA) will apply to the United States Department of Transportation to begin daily, direct service from Los Angeles and San Francisco to China.
The airline said its application addresses the growing demand for service to China from the west coast of the US. United has proposed direct service between San Francisco and Guangzhou in 2008. The new route would be operated with Boeing 777 aircraft.
United has also proposed what it calls the first ever, daily direct service by a US airline between Los Angeles and Shanghai, to begin in 2009. United proposes operating the route with Boeing 747 aircraft.
