Continental submits application for air service to Shanghai

Continental Airlines (NYSE: CAL) has submitted its application to the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) to provide the first direct service by a US carrier between New York/Newark and Shanghai, China.

The airline said it will also provide through flight service between Cleveland and Shanghai. The carrier is reportedly seeking the route award as part of a new aviation agreement officially signed on 9 July 2007, which provides extensive additional air service opportunities between the US and China over the next six years.
