United Airlines said it has received 700 applications for pilot positions since Monday, when it began recruiting.

The Chicago-based carrier is hiring 100 pilots this year. It's the first time since 2001 that United has brought on new pilots.

"It's been a great response," said United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy. "We're really pleased with the caliber of the applicants."
