At least two people died on Sunday when a small plane crashed at Faribault Municipal Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
Four people were on board, but FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro said officials did not know the condition of the others.
The Cirrus SR22 plane was registered to Mayo Aviation in Aberdeen, S.D., and is equipped with a parachute that deploys from the back of the aircraft. The four-seat aircraft burst into flames and scattered debris across the airfield when it crashed just off the runway around 3 p.m., closing the airport.
"There's very little left," Faribault Police Chief Dan Collins said.
The Rice County Sheriff's office declined to give further details, including the identities of the victims.
Molinaro said officials wernot able to find a flight plan, so they are unsure where the plane came from or was headed.
The Federal Aviation Administration will arrive today to investigate. Collins said wind gusts were above 20 mph when the plane went down.
