Harkin Announces Over $2 Million for Iowa Airports

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that Iowa will receive $2,431,763 in grants for construction and safety equipment for regional and municipal airports. The funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Harkin is a member of the Appropriations subcommittee that funds the DOT.

"Keeping air travelers safe and airports up to date is essential to increasing travel across Iowa," Harkin said. "The repairs, new lights and weather safety equipment will benefit the safety of travelers all while boosting Iowa's economy."

Details of funding listed below:

Installation of Weather Equipment- $1,293,060.00

This funding will install weather reporting equipment important for safety at Algona Municipal, Arthur N Neu, Atlantic Municipal, Council Bluffs Municipal, Decorah Municipal, Denison Municipal, Newton Municipal, Sheldon Municipal and Storm Lake Municipal airports.

Red Oak Municipal Airport- $212,501.00

This project will rehabilitate the existing runway pavement that is in need of refurbishment.

Maquoketa Municipal Airport-$88,244.00

This funding will go toward the extension of a runway, which will enable the airport to meet runway safety area and runway protection zone standards.

Muscatine Municipal Airport-$319,378.00

This project will replace the current runway lighting system. The rehabilitation is required to enhance safe airfield operations during low visibility conditions.

Waterloo Regional Airport-$518,580.00

This grant will go toward the acquisition of replacement snow removal equipment including a truck with a plow and a ramp tractor with blade, which will enhance the airport's ability to clear the airfield during adverse weather conditions.
